Medical matters
Amstelveen has excellent medical provisions. First line healthcare includes doctors and dentists and registration at a practice is required in order to access medical care. In case of an emergency and need for an ambulance please call 112.
General Practitioner (GP)
For the purposes of registration, one General Practitioner (GP) will cover a limited area of the town and once the GPs practice has registered the maximum number of patients, he/she may be unable to take in any more. In this case, the doctor will refer you to the nearest established colleague practitioner. The GP provides the most elementary medical care and if they are unable to treat you, you will be referred to a specialist. Dentists, have no geographical restriction with regards to providing service, if they reached the maximum number of patients they will refer you to a colleague as well.
National Health Service
Medical care in the Netherlands is not free of charge. Depending on income, a citizen is compulsorily insured in the National Health Service. In your case, you or your company will usually take out a health insurance policy. You will often be asked to prove that you hold such an insurance when healthcare is being provided. Medication prescribed by a GP or specialist which has to be collected from a pharmacy, must be paid for directly to the pharmacy. You will then be provided with an invoice which you can subsequently charge on to your insurance company.
Hospitals and First Aid Service
The Amstelveen hospital Amstelland includes most of the general specialities. For emergency aid you can refer to the Amstelland hospital seven days a week from 08.00 – 22.00 hrs. For emergency aid beyond these hours, you can refer to the nearby Amsterdam (University) hospitals; the AMC and VU medical centre.
India and Japan Desk
Within the Amstelveen Hospital Amstelland there are also supporting desks for Indian and Japanese expats. These desks aim to support Indian and Japanese expats with their health and medical concerns, and to guide them to the appropriate department and medical practices:
