Locations of potentially unexploded ordnance

We have commissioned a map that shows where unexploded ordnance (NGE) from World War II may be located. Because Amstelveen is near Schiphol Airport, our municipality was often hit by bombs during the war. This soil map of Amstelveen is public and can be viewed by anyone.

What you need to know

  • With this risk map, the municipality and also private parties can check in new projects whether there may be explosives in the area to be developed. This check is mandatory if excavation work has to be done.
  • The largest risk area of possible NGEs is in the Amsterdam Forest
  • The chances of there being explosives are very small. After the war a lot of digging has already been done in the ground during construction projects. If there are explosives, there are no risks as long as the ground is not dug.

Why we do this

Previously, new construction projects required all parties themselves to have a separate historical survey conducted to determine the possible presence of World War II explosives. Now that the municipality is making the bomb map available to everyone, this is no longer necessary.
