Traffic safety around elementary schools

In Amstelveen, we walk or bike to school. Together, we help ensure a safe school environment. Through the “Amstelveen Walks, Amstelveen Bikes” campaign, the municipality aims to encourage parents to have their children walk or bike to school. Together with Veilig Verkeer Nederland, we’ve created a traffic quiz.

The quiz features various locations in Amstelveen and asks questions about traffic rules. The quiz is suitable for all ages. You can take both quizzes.

What you need to know

The municipality is committed to ensuring a safe school environment. That is why we encourage parents to take their children to school by bike or on foot. This reduces traffic around the school and helps create a safe and pleasant environment. Moreover, biking or walking is a great habit—a wonderful opportunity to spend time with your child. Together, we can make walking or biking to school the norm.

Why we do this

We all know it. If we keep driving our children to school, the streets around our elementary schools will never be safe. Parents have also pointed this out: they don’t feel safe in those areas. That’s why we’re committed to bringing about a change. We want to improve traffic safety around elementary schools. By walking or biking to school together, children take their first steps toward participating independently in traffic. We create a safe school environment together.  

What we do

Surveys conducted at a large number of schools in Amstelveen show that parents feel unsafe when dropping off and picking up their children. It’s crowded at those times, and it’s hard to see everything that’s going on. That creates a sense of insecurity. That’s why the municipality has launched a traffic safety program around elementary schools. This program includes a school-specific approach by Veilig Verkeer Nederland (the “Safe School Environment” project), a public awareness campaign, and improvements to public spaces.  

In addition, we have created two traffic quizzes in collaboration with Veilig Verkeer Nederland. The quizzes feature various locations in Amstelveen and include questions about traffic rules. The quizzes are suitable for all ages.

We’re doing this in partnership with Veilig Verkeer Nederland, elementary schools, and parents in Amstelveen. We all want children to be able to get to school safely. That’s why the municipality stands with parents. We’re helping to make the school environment safer. Together, we’re making this change possible.
