Trees in Amstelveen

Amstelveen is a green city and we are proud of that. We cherish parks and trees; we are careful with our more than 32,000 trees. They give us the beautiful green streetscape, provide cooling, absorb rainwater and contribute to the climate resilience of the city. Here you can read why and when we cut down trees, and replant them.

What you need to know

  • Amstelveen wants to preserve and strengthen its core quality as a green city. To this end, a Tree Plan has been drawn up. The Tree Plan(link is external) has a dual purpose: protecting trees and investing in trees
  • Trees we cut in 2024/2025 can be found on the interactive map Trees to be cut 2024/2025
  • For every tree felled, we basically plant a new tree in the same place. And if not in the same place, then in the immediate vicinity. Often the new tree is the same species as the tree that was there.
  • Trees we plant in 2024/2025 can be found on the interactive map Tree replanting 2024/2025
  • We don't just cut down valuable trees, even if they are on private property
  • Trees can cause shade on solar panels. Yet we don't prune the trees then. Solar panels contribute to the generation of renewable energy, but trees absorb CO2 and contribute more to our society. The municipality considers the general interest of green more important than the individual or group interest of solar panels

Why we cut down

Security risk

We cut down a tree if it poses a danger to the surrounding area. We call this an emergency cut. Such an emergency cut is done, for example, after storm damage, or because of extreme deterioration in the quality of a tree. This can be due to age, disease, pests or poor growing conditions of a tree. You can see which trees are urgently felled in the overview Emergency felling.

Redesigning public space

When working on the road network, such as when widening and deepening the A9, we sometimes have to cut down trees. This is also the case with minor adjustments to roads, such as the construction of fiet paths or redevelopment of streets. On the Road Works page and the Construction Projects page you will find information about this for each neighborhood. We always try to preserve as much healthy greenery as possible and restore the removed greenery immediately after the work.

Annual tree renovation

During the annual tree renovation in the planting season, we replace previously felled trees. Sometimes we take the opportunity to rearrange parking spaces, for example. This may involve cutting down a tree. It also happens that we cut down a tree during tree renovation to create light and space to give other plants and/or trees a chance. It can sometimes take a few months before we replace a felled tree with a new one. The goal is to replant as many trees as possible.

Who do we work with?

  • Not only the municipality inspects trees. An outside agency inspects a 3rd of our trees each year for safety and condition. After 3 years, all trees have been inspected
  • The Green Council is watching and thinking about the list of trees to be cut down. We then incorporate this into the interactive map Trees to be cut down Amstelveen 2024(link is external).
